Rare-Metal-Free LWIR Lenses: Sovereign, Ruggedized Thermal Optics for Defense
Overcoming Germanium Vulnerabilities: Sintered ZnS Thermal Optics for Tactical Defense Environments
In military thermal imaging, relying on legacy optical architectures presents critical design bottlenecks and severe supply chain risks. Export bans and raw material instability surrounding Germanium threaten defense program longevity. Concurrently, the mechanical weight of traditional athermalization and structural protective windows limits payload optimization on tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), remote weapon stations (RWS), and armored vehicle surround-view arrays.
Exclusively distributed across Europe by CBC Group, the Sumitomo Electric Sintered ZnS Lens Series fundamentally re-engineers defense LWIR optics. By shifting the material base to high-purity, rare-metal-free Zinc Sulfide, this series guarantees absolute supply chain sovereignty alongside groundbreaking environmental resilience.

Extreme Thermal Stability Without Active Mechanics
One of the most persistent headaches for defense vision engineers is the dramatic focus shift caused by temperature fluctuations on Germanium lenses (dn/dT = 396 ppm/K). In battlefield scenarios where temperatures can transition rapidly, a non-athermalized Ge lens suffers severe resolution degradation.
Sumitomo solves this at the molecular level. Zinc Sulfide possesses a highly stable refractive index material property ( (dn/dT = 41 ppm/K)). Backed by Sumitomo’s precise optical housing design, the series achieves passive, ruggedized athermalization across a broad operational envelope of -40°C to +85°C, ensuring consistent, high-contrast target identification without heavy motorized focusing hardware.
Ballistic Ruggedness & Footprint Downsizing
Traditional infrared cameras require an external Germanium protective window to prevent sand ablation, rain erosion, and impact damage from destroying the primary optics. This adds immense cost, optical loss, and weight.
Sumitomo’s high-strength sintered material allows for a direct Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) hard coat on the outer lens surface. This allows the first lens element to serve double duty as the structural protective window. It completely withstands harsh sand, rain, and environmental exposure. It enables system designers to significantly downsize camera profiles and trim sensor weight down to a remarkable 6g to 20g on wide-angle configurations.
Versatile Tactical Lineup
Optimized for modern 12µm and 17µm pixel pitch Focal Plane Arrays (FPAs), the lineup ranges from expansive super-wide situational awareness to tightly targeted tracking profiles:
Super-WideRAwarness: Models like the 3.8mm f/1.25 and 4.4mm f/1.25 afford an ultra-wide 120° to 171° Horizontal Field of View (HFOV), matching the exact needs of close-range vehicle surround-monitoring and blind-spot protection.
Mid-to-Long Ranges: Ranging up to 18.8mm f/1.0 and 35.0mm f/1.1 variants for distinct narrow field tracking requirements.
Tactical Integration: Every lens features an integrated thread-type lens mount (ranging from M16 to M34) and incorporates IP67-rated sealing between the first lens element and the cap to completely isolate internal electronics.
The Strategic Advantage for Defense OEMs
By integrating Sumitomo’s molded ZnS optics into your defense platform, you achieve system-level optimization:
Eliminate ITAR/Export Constraints: Secure a non-restricted material stream that bypasses rare-metal sanctions.
Reduce Payload Mass: Shed critical grams from the front end of stabilizing gimbals on micro-UAVs and loitering munitions.
Battle-Tested OEE: Maintain a permanent, fixed-focus lock through intense operational environments, minimizing fields-of-view failures.
